🎉 What is Songkran?
Songkran is the traditional Thai New Year celebrated from April 13 to 15 every year. It’s the country’s largest and most colorful festival, symbolizing purification and renewal, and marked by friendly water fights in the streets!
During the same time, several Southeast Asian countries—like Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, and parts of India—also celebrate their own New Year festivals with similar cultural customs.
Even some indigenous groups in Bangladesh celebrate the “Biju” festival with comparable water-related rituals, creating a beautiful cross-cultural connection.
💦 The Highlight – The World’s Happiest Water War!
The main event of Songkran? Water! Locals and tourists flood the streets armed with colorful water guns, buckets of cold water, and big smiles! The water represents cleansing of the past year’s bad luck, and in the sweltering April heat, it’s a blast—literally!
🪷 Another lovely tradition is smearing a natural paste (often sandalwood-based) on faces. No one gets annoyed—it's all part of the joy!
🎶 Add in street music, parties, traditional performances, and mouthwatering Thai food—and the whole country turns into one giant, joyful family!
